My first try: Paint a t-shirt (D.I.Y)

Today, let’s talk about how you can upgrade a garment by something which we all loved during our childhood? “PAINT AWAY!” Now if you are thinking that you are not good in drawing, worry not! There’s an easy thing for you too!

During my college, we were supposed to study about “Madhubani” art; a form of Indian art. I was in awe of it’s designs and intricacy. In order to incorporate this art in my everyday life, I made this chic and pretty T-shirt. It took around 2 hours for me to make it from scratch.

And, you can do it too. It’s simple, doesn’t consume much time and is always unique! Something made by you; perfect to express your eccentric self or to even gift it to someone special. The best thing, it will be extraordinary.

For the starters, here is a list of simple things to keep in mind:

Always make sure that the garment on which you are about to paint is thoroughly washed.
Use only fabric colors or fabric markers to achieve that effect and for it to last longer.
Make sure your paint is evenly spread and avoid layering too much. It will make it look unpleasant and may cause breakage of the painted design.
Do not wash the garment immediately after painting.
Try avoiding drawing by pencil as it may ruin your garment. A white or yellow carbon paper is best as it washes away.

If you are not a pro in drawing, you can always get a simple template/design printed out(any of your choice from the internet); use it as a stencil while you paint. The only thing, this way you won’t be able to have intricate designs. What I did is freehand drawing.

What all you need:

A garment
Fabric paint/ Fabric markers
Brushes/sponge/spray
Stencil(Optional)
White/yellow carbon paper
Newspaper/ Cardboard
Iron (optional)

How to paint??

Set up your work area. Gather everything you need.
Start by putting the newspaper/cardboard inside the t-shirt/garment. As it will help in preventing the paint from bleeding onto the back of the t-shirt.
In case you are using stencil, place it on the desired space. For those using carbon, trace your design where you like.
Paint your design using fabric paints. Preferably, start from background color and then add details.
Let the paint dry completely.
In order to have a longer staying design, it’s better to hot iron the back of your design once it is completely dried.

And that’s it! You have your own personalized t-shirt!! It’s that easy!
