SIMPLE STRAIGHT SALWAR

The most basic kind of salwar is the plain, straight salwar pants which are neither too baggy nor slim fit. They are loose and the bottoms are a bit narrow but not too tight. These are worn with knee length Kameez and kurtas.

PATIALA SUITS

Patiala is the name of a place in Punjab and Patiala suits are the typical Punjabi style suits worn by the women there. These are baggy and wide and have a lot of pleats. The pleats begin to fall from the waist and gather at the back of the legs. The bottom is constricted to fit rightly at the ankles. Since there are so many pleats making up the entire Patiala salwar, you need twice the fabric you would need to make a normal salwar.

DHOTI SALWARS

The traditional Indian male wear is the dhoti which has an elaborate process of tying a long piece of cloth. The dhoti pant salwar has a pre-stitched dhoti like appearance with a very narrow and slanted ankle portion. The pleats form successive U’s at the sides while going from front to back. The pleats are made and pre-stitched in such a manner that they take the form of a dhoti. These are very loose and very comfortable for daily wear in the Indian climate. These are generally worn with a shorter kameez to flaunt the pleats of the dhoti pants.

PARALLEL SALWARS

Parallel salwars, as the name suggests, are of the same width from the top to bottom. The bottom section is straight and wide running like parallel lines. They may be plain or embroidered and are usually worn with knee length kameezes or those even below the knee length.

PAKISTANI SALWARS

Pakistani salwars are popular types of salwar kameezes among the women in Pakistan. They are loose and wide bottomed. Unlike the parallels, the cuffs here are very wide and almost have a skirt like appearance. Another specialty about these suits is that the kameezes are really long and expose only a slight bit of the salwar pants.

SHARARA SALWARS

Sharara is a special kind of Pakistani salwar suits where the pants are narrow and tight at the knees and then is spread out with wide cuffs like usual Pakistani suits. They appear like skirts that are narrow at the knees. These are traditional Muslim outfits, usually worn at weddings.

TROUSER SALWAR

This is a modern kind of a salwar suit where the pants have the look of trousers. The salwars look like ankle length Western trousers. These make the salwar kameez appear cool and sophisticated for office going women. These are usually worn with kameezes below the knee.

CHURIDARS

Churidar is a variation of the normal salwar suit where the pants are tight and slim fit instead of being loose and wide. They are long enough to form wrinkled rings at the ankles which give it its name ‘churidar’.
